Cal Football: Armed Forces Mass Swearing In (September 5, 2009)

As part of Spirit of America Day, during the halftime of the Cal vs Maryland Football game on September 5th, the young men and women from the Bay Area took their oath of enlistment prior to departing for basic training with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. Captain Tony Laird, United States Navy, department head for the Cal Berkeley Military Affairs Department, representing Cal ROTC, gave the oath.

On September 15, 2009 Alex Perez-Rojas became the newest member of the Golden Bear Battalion. He joins a long tradition of cadets who graduate and commission into the United States Army to lead the sons and daughters of America.

On the evening of Saturday, May 23, 2009, the Golden Bear Battalion conducted the commissioning ceremony for 2LT's Kapelanski, Knight, Yang, Smythe, Podlogar, and Chee.

Dr. Tommie Smith

100 Black Men of America, Oakland Chapter and Dr. Tommie Smith

On Friday May 15, 2009, Dr. Tommie Smith came to Edwards Stadium to support the Golden Bear Battalion and the Tommie Smith Track and Field Meet. This event is held annually and is in support of inner city children. Dr. Smith is best known for his support for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1968 XIX Olympiad in Mexico City, Mexico. There, he and John Carlos stood on the victory podium, draped with their Olympic medals, each raised a clenched fist, covered in a black leather glove in a historic stand for the Civil Rights Movement.

The Track and Field Meet is also supported by the 100 Black Men of America, Oakland Chapter. This is an organization focused on improving the lives of underprivileged African American children. There are chapters located all of the country to include, New York City, Atlanta, Chicago and Houston.

CADET AWARDS CEREMONY 2009


On Wednesday, May 13, 2009, the cadets were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the areas of academics, military science, leadership, and involvement in the community.

The first set of awards was presented by the PMS, LTC David Fee, as a representative from Cadet Command, in recognition of the cadets tremendous performance throughout the year. The presentation was held near the Faculty Club, located on the campus of UC Berkeley.

The second set of awards was presented by various organizations from all over the Bay Area to the cadets to recognize the achievements of the students as the integrate the civilian education into a military career. Organizations that were present for the event were the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the American Legion, the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America and the Daughters of the American Revolution, just to name a few. This ceremony was held in the Lippman Room found in Barrows Hall on UC Berkeley's Campus.

HAIL AND FAREWELL 2009


On the evening of Friday, May 15, 2009, the Golden Bear Battalion had a Hail and Farewell at Chevy's Fresh Mex in Emeryville. The purpose for a Hail and Farewell in an Army unit is to welcome in the newest members of the Army team and say goodbye to those members who are moving on to another unit. This specific Hail and Farewell was to welcome CPT Barnes into the Golden Bear Battalion and to say goodbye to LTC Fee, MSG Jusino, 2LT Suen and the eight graduating seniors CDTs Smythe, Yang, Knight, Chee, Kapelanski, Podlogar, Morse, and Ellsworth.

CDT FLEMMINGS CONTRACTING CEREMONY

ST. MARY'S COLLEGE

On Wednesday, May 20, 2009, the CDT Shahar Flemmings, from St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA, took the first step to becoming a commissioned officer. She swore allegiance to protect and defend the Constitution and the United states of America. CDT Flemmings is the newest member of the Golden Bear Battalion and we look forward to her success both at St. Mary's College and within the United States Army.

CDT Flemmings has also been awarded a 3.5 year SCHOLARSHIP which is valued at over $175,000 to continue to attend St. Mary's College. This does not include the monthly salary that she will make as well as a book bonus every year.
